CASE STUDIES

A Prominent Government Agency of NYC

This wasn’t an ordinary job—this was an over 100-year-old building, one of the toughest in New York City to

work in.

The Ask:

The client needed to unify their Access Control Security System onto a single platform. Their outdated setup relied on two separate systems with independent databases, creating inefficiencies and complicating security management.

The age of the building presented major challenges, from outdated infrastructure to hazards hidden behind walls. Its dated architectural design created extremely confined spaces, leaving little room for redundancy and minimal area for our techs to perform their tasks. On top of that, strict security protocols and daily clearance requirements meant our entire crew (which consisted of over 10 technicians deployed 6 days a week over a 6-month period) had to operate with precision and care, every single day. This wasn’t just about the work—it was about working the right way,

following every rule while still delivering on a demanding timeline.

The client, who has trusted Mason for years, knew we were the right team for the job. They called on us to deliver a system that was dependable, efficient, and built to last. That’s the Mason way: the highest quality workmanship at a moment’s notice.

Our Approach

Mason Technologies implemented a Mercury-based access control system to consolidate the two existing databases into a single, streamlined platform. This solution included the installation and integration of:

• LENELS2 software with Mercury hardware
• Unified Altronix enclosures for enhanced system efficiency and reliability

Our team ensured a seamless transition, aligning the system to meet the client’s operational and security requirements through a robust design and build process. Leveraging Lenel’s OnGuard Access Control solution, Mason upgraded a building-wide access control system into a single, centralized security platform. This integration added all doors in the facility to the client’s central offsite server, providing visibility across the entire building with a Lenel-standardized control solution.

Executing this project in one of New York City’s most secure facilities posed significant hurdles. The building operates 24/7 with no downtime, requiring Mason’s team to primarily work at night. Rigorous security protocols demanded extensive access checks and clearances, with a police officer present at all times. Despite these challenges, Mason adapted to ensure uninterrupted operations while maintaining the highest standards of security and precision.

Mason deployed the project turnkey for the agency, which included:

• Cabling, physical installation, door modifications, product procurement, commissioning, and training.
• Installing new locking hardware, door contacts, composite cabling, HID card readers, and exit devices at every access control location.
• Spanning parking areas, perimeter entry, turnstiles, gates, and interior entry points.
• Adding multiple alarm-only locations for first-floor and roof access to enhance perimeter security and monitoring.

Mason not only upgraded the head-end servers and software but also modernized the access control network distribution throughout the facility. Our team ran network cabling for panels and security desks, enabling centralized health monitoring for the system. We also added workstations at the security desks, allowing the agency to fully leverage system control and centralized management.

The Result

This project wasn’t just a success—it was a testament to Mason’s ability to deliver in the most challenging conditions. This facility, one of the most secure and difficult buildings to work in across New York City, presented countless hurdles: its century-old infrastructure, rigorous security protocols, and strict clearance requirements for every step of the job. Adding to the complexity, the facility operated 24/7, meaning any technical downtime was not an option. Door by door, station by station, we worked with precision to ensure every system remained fully operational at all times.

Despite these challenges, Mason rose to the occasion. Our team worked around the clock—nights, weekends, whatever it took—to deliver a unified, fully integrated access control solution on time and on budget.

Through our expertise and dedication, we gained the trust of everyone at the facility, from security personnel to leadership. The new system provides centralized control, improved security operations, and a streamlined platform that ensures reliability for years to come.

The agency was so impressed by our work and professionalism that they’ve already asked for a “Part II”—with even more upgrades and integrations to enhance the facility further. More on Part II coming soon!
