CWA, America's largest communications and media union, represents over 700,000 men and women in both private and public sectors, including over half a million workers who are building the Information Highway.
CWA members are employed in telecommunications, broadcasting, cable TV, journalism, publishing, electronics and general manufacturing, as well as airline customer service, government service, health care, education and other fields.
The union includes some 1,200 chartered local unions across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Members live in approximately 10,000 communities, making CWA one of the most geographically diverse unions.
CWA holds over 2,000 collective bargaining agreements spelling out wages, benefits, working conditions and employment security provisions for its members. The Governor’s Office of Minority and Women’s Business Development was created by Article 15-A of the Executive Law in July of 1988. This legislation provides a statutorily based program for better integrating M / WBEs into the state’s procurement activities. In 1992, Article 4-A of the Economic Development Law incorporated the Office into the Department of Economic Development as a division. The Suffolk County Women’s Business Enterprise Coalition (SCWBEC) is the only organization of its kind on Long Island. SCWBEC was originally established in 1990 under the Suffolk County Office of Affirmative Action and Minority Affairs by a group of visionary business women.
